Custom Split Rail Gate On Charles Street

Building a rustic back yard entrance with custom fencing.

Trying Something New

On occasion, there is a request for custom work. This home owner wanted to remove their old dilapidated split rail fence and install a new one along with a gate and a trellis for a vining plant. To be honest, this project is outside of our normal scope, but we are always excited for an opportunity to learn and hone new skills. Setting the fence posts and split rails was easy, however, creating a custom gate to match was the new challenge.

Custom Gate

We utilized split rail fencing parts to make the custom gate. Two split rail posts were cut to size and 3 split rails were cut to match the fence. Then, we added some 2×4 members for bracing to make the gate rigid. The 2×4’s required some custom cuts and planing in the split rails. Overall we were very pleased with the finished gate. However, it was very heavy.

Installation

Finally, it was time to install the gate. Because of the weight, heavy duty hardware was required. The gate was hung and tested to ensure that it opened freely and could be secured close. Last, the trellis was assembled and driven into the ground so that our client could plant a climbing vine in the future to create a whimsical entrance into their back yard.
