Lancaster Window Box and Drip Irrigation Install

A business trip to install an automated irrigation system for window boxes and planters.

Traveling for Business

One of our clients owns a vacation rental in Lancaster, PA. Conveniently, a continuing education course for a company license holds a seminar in Lancaster. Since we would be in the area, we took on a niche project to install window box planters as well as an automated drip irrigation system for our client’s rental. The planters were already on site when we arrived. Our job was simply to install them level and centered, and install an irrigation system to keep the plants watered.

Proper Planning

It is imperative to consider a few factors when designing a drip irrigation system for planters. The system must be designed in a way to deliver adequate and relatively equal amounts of water to each planter, and the system should be discreet. In this photo, we are installing a 1/2 inch “main line” to supply the smaller micro drip tubing evenly. After sizing and cutting the drip irrigation supply line, single strap clamps secured the drip line in a safe and discreet location.

Installing the Final Runs

1/4 inch micro lines branch off of the main drip irrigation line to supply each planter. Just like the main line, these smaller lines are secured in place with hardware to ensure that they do not become a tripping hazard and maintain a clean, professional appearance. All of the products we use are professional contractor grade materials. They are UV resistant plastic and polymers that will last several years under normal conditions.

Controller Programming

After installing all of the drip irrigation lines, we programmed an automatic hose bib timer that controls the watering schedule. This way, the cleaners do not need to remember to water the outdoor plants. Additionally, the home will look lively and vibrants with annual plants when guests arrive for vacation. Once the entire drip system was properly installed, it was turned on and inspected.

On-going Maintenance

It is important to check the system periodically for even watering patterns and leaks. Occasionally, lines can become clogged and prevent water from traveling to its final destination. Leaks are also important to maintain so that water, and money, are not wasted. Rodents have chewed lines before, requiring replacement. Planters and flower pots are nearly guaranteed to be lush all summer long with a drip irrigation system installed and programmed properly.
